They say winning is a habit!

Who would of thought back in early July that with one game to go Swanton 1sts would be in 5th place and have just won their 5th game out of 6?  We were dead and buried back in July but somehow with a bit of luck and a fair bit of determination we have clawed our way out of trouble and are now the form team in the league.

Full praise for Adam and Sozza yesterday for some great batting which followed a good all-round bowling peformance from the boys and some good solid catching.

Should be a good game next week and a nice way to round off what could be described as a “roller coaster ride” of  season!

3 in a row!

Why couldn’t this season have started 4 weeks ago? Full credit to all the boys for pulling yet another great performance out of the bag – to win comfortably over at Snettisham on a wet pitch with 10 men is no mean feat. Lets now go on and enjoy the last 2 games with a little less pressure!

The miracle escape is on!

2 wins in 2 games and suddenly things look a whole lot more rosey for the Swanton boys. It took some concentration and a bit of flight and guile to get a win in a low scoring game over at Springwood but win we did and yesterday we produced the performance we have been waiting for all season to win by over 140 runs against Bircham. Great effort by the batsmen led by skipper JB with a solid ton, a slight contrast to his first baller the week before!

Support was offered by the legendary Meaty who continues to baffle the oppostion with his unique batting style – not pretty but very effective. Good pressure bowling by Shoey and Wayno and a little help from the weather gods allowed us the time to get the wickets we needed to wrap up a crucial win. 3 games to go and then we can all go and hybernate for the winter!

Great Effort by the boys

What a good game of cricket that was yesterday – it was nice to see Grimston seriously worried. If we can take this form into the next few games we have got a great chance of staying up – heads on for next week!

Blog update

Hello again blog fans!

Its been a while since i’ve blogged (for which I apologise for) so I thought I would give a brief update on the main highlights…..

The biggest news has to be that Swanton Morley 1sts have won 2 games! Two great performances against Terrington and Leverington have broken the win duck and made us all feel slightly better – we may still be bottom but we are definately still in the game.

It was good to see two old regulars back on Saturday – Ricky ‘Horse Thong’ Forder and Steve ‘Shoey’ Shoesmith rolling back the years and making good contributions.

The two hightlights of the Terrington game were Danny ‘PC’ Lake getting a gritty hundred and a five wicket hall from a certain aging left arm grenade chucker.

The old boys are not quite over the hill yet and with a few more good performances the great escape could just be achieved – well you never know!

Enjoyable loss

Sometimes it is possible to have an enjoyable loss. Yesterday was one of those days when an inexperienced team put up a good fight away to a team right up at the top of the league. Jonny did a great job of pulling together 11 bodies and actually those 11 put up one of Swanton’s better performances of the season. It was great to see 2 youngsters opening the bowling and although runs were conceeded great promise was shown.

The skipper showed good resolve and batted with skill and intelligence to bring up an excellent ton by picking the right fielder to hit it to! – well done Jonny.

Please don’t send it any more nominations for the teflon award – not only has meaty won this years award I think he may have also won drop of the century – cider levels were probably running low after his mammoth batting effort.

Next up Snettisham at home and the old rivalry continues…..

One of those days

No matter how much you coach and tell people you should play straight you sometimes wonder whether swinging across the line and trusting your eye might be better – yesterday was one of those days!
The guys gave it all they could on Saturday for the 1st team but no matter where we stood in the field the ball seemed to drop somewhere else – lets just hope we get the same luck next week. On a positive note it was great to see some new faces making their debuts on Saturday – the sight of Russell ‘porno’ Emmanelle running in and making the batsmen jump around was a refreshing sight and makes us all look forward to some dry bouncing wickets! Lets all hope Russ can bring some caribbean flair into the team. One highlight of the day was Barry arriving back from his game in the 2nds and annoucing he had taken 6-25, shortly before explaining that they had lost by 150 runs – if only he could bowl his hand grenades from both ends!

All the best – memphis

It can only get better from here!

Ok so the idea of a practice match is to get some practice – good job we did going by Saturday!
Highlights of the day? Not sure any particulary spring to mind except possibly the sight of Wayno jumping around as if he had just won tokens from advanced hair studio after taking the wickets of a few of the more ‘high profile’ wickets!
I have had a call from the scouts of the Delhi Dare-Devils who would like to sign up Arthur and Richard as their overseas opening partnership for next years IPL.

Speak to you soon, Memphis

Here we go again!

Well its almost here again, the start of another season of hopes, dreams and real ale.

This season there are a lot of questions that need to be answered;
Has Nick bought another bolser wood bat?
How many times can Barry be given out LBW?
Is Soran still wearing his Mum’s sunglasses?

These are all important questions which I’m sure will get answered in time.

I’ve tried to think of some regular topics to cover on this blog and have so far come up with the following ideas;

Champagne moment of the weekend – can anybody beat Meaty finding a bra in his bag?

Moobs of year – no explanation required

Original sledge of the year – seatbelts on lads!

Telflon award for most embarrassing drop of the season – Arthur is not eligible for this award as we need to give others a chance.

I would like to get other suggestions from members – please try to keep them semi-decent and preferable having some tenuous link to cricket.

See you all on the 18th – N

Welcome to the blog

Welcome to the first instalment of the ’stroking one through the covers’. The aim of this blog is to act as an off the wall look at the season wth Swanton and how we progress along with all the comedy moments along the way. I look forward to commenting on the escapades of the likes of meaty, damo, waynos and the legendary greeno.

All the best Nathan (memphis) Raines
